The Quest for Dolphins
Set in the shooting hours, the line dividing land from water glowed pink and amber in the gentle sunrise two men motionlessly faced one another on a decaying wooden dock. What was left was that dream that they both carried in their hearts which could be compared to an old carving on their bow, to look for the dolphins in the middle of the ocean.
Tom, who had been with the fishing vessels, had a rugged look on his face depicting adventures of wrestling storms while preserving calmness of celebrations found on the sea. His companion named Ethan is younger and excited, he had the passion of the burning flame in him and translated it into the movement of his eyes to the movement of the water below.
“We will locate them today, Ethan.” Tom said, the harshness in his tone masked only slightly by the optimism shining out. ‘Well, the dolphins swim in these waters anytime the tide is good for swimming according to them.’
Ethan nodded slowly, wiped his sweaty forehead with the back of his hand, and continued to stare at the horizon marked with the azure sky. “I can’t wait to see them Tom, when they jump around, play, it really feels like they have some sort of witchcraft.”
And so they sailed with a boat comprised utterly of rust and with wind as their compass and ambition as their map. The ocean welcomed them with open arms; the smell of salt in the air mixed and come together in the feeling that was exuding from them. Day turned to night, and night to day and still they lay still as Statues, watching the ocean – a shimmering mass of water – roaring with unbroken secrets.
And then, as if through their union, as though it wanted to be, something appeared on the face of that silvered night on blue. Stubbornly holding the rusted handle, the young man raised his hand to indicate the painting to the viewers, with the same enthusiasm of a boy looking at a toy. "There, Ethan! Look!"
Several dolphins, which had attractive and smooth skin and body, and a shimmering skin color, sailed close to the boat in the water. The genuine, clear-sounding laughter of Porthos and Aramis reached the ears of the two men, and the vibration started in their souls. Ethan released a sigh as the shutter button of the camera was pressed down and capture this particular moment where there is so much joy and lots of liveliness.
Within minutes they enjoyed hours hovering and they were unaware that it was with these new friends. They jumped, dived and swam in a manner that naturally enforced the brutality of the sea’s inhabitants. Each bound – freedom and each twist – a salutation to the unsinkable spirit of the ocean.
As the heat of the day increase and the sun turns to a reddish orange, slowly rising across the water Ethan looked at Tom. Then they stared into one another’s eyes – the look of two individuals who contemplate on the creation by the same master sculptor of the universe to merge into one due to the trip and, more importantly, respect.
‘We found them Tom,’ Ethan whispered every word in the ways of thankfulness. "Thank you. "
Tom just looked and smiled, and it was clear that several lines immediately aggravated the words that became wrinkles. “It did feel like heaven Ethan, we get to see more than just dolphins today. It was a piece of the sea, in a way, that we brought home with us.”
Consequently, with dolphins’ laughter fading, and the wind gusting over the sea water through their hair, they prepared for the boat to head back home. Being submerged into the darkness the ocean still affectionated nights appreciation of their dreams and how always the endeavor for the sake of quite simple joys in live is worth the trip.
